Following their success with the De Havilland Comet, Dan-Air wanted to expand its services overseas and in 1970 received a permit to fly charters to the USA for an initial period of five years. G-AYSL (construction number 17599) was one the first of two Boeing 707s that Dan-Air bought from Pan American for this purpose and was handed over on 7 January 1971. Crew training was carried out at Newcastle, followed by the aircraft's introduction into service in March. The aircraft was mainly used on Trans-Atlantic charter flights from Gatwick, but was also used on some of their other densely trafficked inclusive tour routes, particularly around the Mediterranean. This aircraft was joined by a second Boeing 707 in 1972 and both were used on numerous Trans-Atlantic passenger charters from Gatwick, Manchester and Prestwick to North America and Canada. A further four Boeing 707s were purchased by Dan-Air for use as freighters is association with IAS Cargo Airlines. G-AYSL was originally built for Pan American World Airways as N721PA and delivered in October 1959. It was withdrawn from use at stored at Kansas in September 1970, before being sold to Dan-Air the following year. It was leased to British Airways in July 1978, then British Airtours the following year before being withdrawn from use at the end of 1979. Although sold to cargo airline, it was broken up for spares at Lasham, Hants. In February 1983.
